Being sick takes a toll on our bodies. However, despite a reduced appetite and lowering of energy levels, this study shows that nutrition is especially important during and after an illness like COVID-19 in order to make up for the muscle and nutrients lost. With that, here are some foods you should eat for a fast recovery.
Broth
Aside from water, the broth is also a great way to hydrate yourself since it gives a natural way to replenish the body’s electrolytes. It’s also high in protein which helps build muscle mass. During and after sickness, it might be difficult to stomach anything. A guide by Web Md details how the broth is a good light substitute for high-fat food. COVID causes hyper inflammation, which causes breathing difficulties, and broth contains carnosine, which helps ease inflammation. And like other hot liquids, it can clear nasal passages.
Eggs
Similar to broth, eggs are high in protein. A used-up stock of protein in the body means lower immunity, so a high-protein diet will help build it back up. Eggs also contain amino acids that protect you against pathogens.
Nuts
Almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, and other kinds of nuts contain vitamin E. This is an antioxidant that gives you the energy you lost and helps you build a strong immune system. Nuts contain protein as well.
Beans
Beans have high amounts of zinc — this mineral may be only a trace mineral in the body, but it boosts your immune system and helps the body fight toxins. It’s found in every cell in your body and also helps in nerve function and is needed for senses of taste and smell. One of the symptoms of COVID is the lack of taste, and zinc can help you recover from that.
Whole Grains
Whole grains like brown rice and quinoa are complex carbohydrates that can give you more energy compared to refined carbohydrates, like white rice. Compared to other foods in this list, this may take a bit more preparation and time before you can eat it. However, it’s very flexible. For one, this article shows how easy it is to prepare whole grains using modern rice cookers — they’re literally just one button from being cooked. You can cook the grains alongside your viand without the flavors mixing. You can even use the rice cooker to make porridge rather than regular rice if you feel like you can’t stomach completely solid food yet.
Vitamin C- Rich Food
Citrus fruits, like oranges and grapefruits, and leafy greens, such as kale and broccoli, are high in vitamin C. Vitamin C helps in microbial killing and with the formation of antibodies, which strengthens the immune system. It’s also a strong antioxidant that supports lung health. It’s important to note, however, that vitamin C won’t stop you from being sick, yet it definitely helps speed up the recovery process.
Being sick in the time of a pandemic, regardless of if the sickness is COVID or not, can be quite scary. However, our post says that you can always consult your family doctor to ask about your condition. Even if you’re not sick, you should still have a routine check-up.
